Limonos near Kalloni
Limonos Monastery is the largest monastery on Lesvos and has a turbulent and interesting historical importance.
In 1523 the Sultan of Turkey who ruled the island requested the services of Saint Ignatius of Kalloni. The sultan's son had a deformed hand and Ignatius was asked to heal the boy. Upon the miraculous recovery of the impediment, the Saint asked for permission to build the monastery as a place of sanctuary and so it has been ever since.
Today Limnos houses a superb library and museum of religious artifacts. There are over 40 individual churches of worship here and beautiful courtyard gardens.
